UPSURGE 2024 – Bay of Islands Arts Festival
A biennial Festival of the arts held in and around the Bay of Islands region. Black Box Theatre is proud to play host to 5 different shows across the 2024 September Festival.
Blithe Spirit
“Blithe Spirit” is a delightful comedy that introduces us to Charles Condomine, a novelist who invites an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to his house for a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The evening takes a hilariously unexpected turn when the ghost of his first wife, Elvira, is summoned, leading to a series of comedic and unforeseen complications.
The Orange Box – 23rd March
Step into Naranjarte’s magical world, founded in 2011
by visionary artists Ana Lorite and Sergio Aguilar.
Their performances are immersive journeys,
challenging perceptions and delighting audiences.
‘The Orange Box,’ a developmental show, blends
spirited circus acts, intricate puppetry, and enchanting
illusions, from hand puppets to marionettes.
The Taming of the Shrew
Kerikeri Theatre Company presents “The Taming of the Shrew” at Kainui Vineyard. Set against the backdrop of the fun and vibrant 1960s, this classic comedy comes alive with a modern twist, promising an evening full of laughter and lively energy.
A Rockin’ Christmas – 20th December
A rockin’ Christmas is around the corner! To celebrate the end of a banger year The Production Club are throwing two shows BACK 2 BACK 20th December 2023 with bands The Remote(S), Monkey Sweatshirt, and more!
Early youth show: 4pm – 6pm ($5 Entry)

Hokianga Meets Chic
Kerikeri Theatre Company is thrilled to showcase “Hokianga Meets Chic” – an evocative solo play by the talented Noa Campbell. Venture into the life of a Māori girl from Hokianga as she narrates her ‘packing and leaving’ moments through a riveting journey of assimilation and reclamation, sprinkled with flavours from around the world. It’s not just a play; it’s a heartfelt story that promises to be as vivid and memorable as the tales it tells.
Social Climbers – September 2023
Roger Hall’s insightful situational comedy follows a group of female teachers, plus one reluctantly accompanying daughter, who embark on a weekend of bushwalking in the mountains to get away from it all. Throughout their journey, they encounter truth, consequences, and unexpected revelations…
Live Music Fundraiser – 18th August 2023
Join us for an unforgettable evening as the Black Box Theatre proudly hosts a live fundraiser, featuring the high-spirited Okaihau College Band, “SMILES”. Experience a performance by our own teenage member, Hayley Taylor, as she and her band weave their youthful energy into classics from Amy Winehouse, Etta James, and Elton John, as well as an original song penned by Hayley for the tangata beats competition earlier this year.
