The Black Box Theatre is excited to yet again play a part in this year’s UPSURGE Bay of Islands Arts Festival. We are proud to provide a platform for these unique and engaging shows that deserve to be seen and celebrated. UPSURGE 2024 will bring a wonderful variety of performances, showcasing talent from across Aotearoa and our region.

We are delighted to present our programme for the 2024 Upsurge Bay of Islands Arts Festival. The focus for our second Upsurge as directors is to continue to celebrate our wonderful rohe and the fabulous people who live here. Much of our programme is directly connected to this amazing region. We also look forward to welcoming many talented artists from around Aotearoa.
Troy Kingi, Hollie Smith, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Michael Houstoun, Hinemoa Elder, Dame Gaylene Preston and Jacob Rajan are just some of the amazing artists who will be with us during Upsurge. We can’t wait, and we hope that Upsurge 2024 brings you some much-needed beauty and joy.”

Special Festival Offerings:
In true Black Box Theatre style, doors will open one hour before each show, giving you the perfect opportunity to enjoy delicious platters to share from the Plough and Feather and locally crafted beer and wine from our friends at Kainui Vineyard & Brew Co. These will also be available during intermission (if any) and after the show, so come early, relax, and soak in the festival atmosphere.

Can I buy a ticket on the door?
Yes! Subject to availability, tickets will be available on the door.
Can you help me, I have a ticket enquiry?
If you have any ticketing enquiries, please direct these to iTicket as we are not involved in the ticketing of the UPSURGE events.
What kind of seating do you provide?
Seating is on a tiered structure. Seats are not numbered and are therefore, un-allocated.
Please arrive early to get a good spot.

Can I bring my own food or drink into the show?
Please do not bring in outside food or drinks. We will have food and drink available to purchase an hour before the show, during intermission (if any) and for an hour after the show.
Will I be able to buy food and drinks?
Yes, we will have non-alcoholic and some alcoholic drinks available to purchase as well as food and snacks.
